The Commonwealth has voiced concern over the detention of Ugandan opposition leader Kizza Besigye, along with Haji Obeid Lutale and Lawyer Eron Kiiza.
Secretary-General Patricia Scotland condemned their detention as a violation of Uganda’s Supreme Court ruling, which deemed the trial of civilians in military courts unconstitutional. She urged Ugandan authorities to comply with the ruling and release those held unlawfully.
Scotland also raised alarm over Besigye’s deteriorating health due to a hunger strike and called for immediate medical attention. She reaffirmed the Commonwealth’s commitment to monitoring the situation and supporting a peaceful resolution aligned with democratic principles.
