The Police Reforms Working Group and Civic Freedoms Forum have urged President William Ruto to conduct a competitive recruitment process for the next Inspector General of Police following the resignation of Japheth Koome. They emphasized that the new appointee should meet qualifications outlined in the National Police Service Act, including a degree and extensive experience in relevant fields. The groups also called for the restoration of the National Police Service Commission’s role in recruiting senior officers, which was altered by the 2014 Security Laws Amendment Act. Additionally, they urged investigations into police misconduct during recent protests, noting that no officers have been held accountable for human rights violations.
