An audit reveals that the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) is facing a severe financial crisis, with a Sh350 million deficit reported for the year ending June 30, 2023. Auditor General Nancy Gathungu warns that without urgent intervention, the bureau may collapse. Over the past five years, KNBS’s revenue reserve has drastically fallen from Sh8.7 billion in 2019 to Sh1.3 billion. The agency, responsible for critical national data including census and economic reports, is also struggling to recover Sh55 million in debts, casting further doubts on its financial sustainability.
