A tense six-hour standoff between investigators and ousted South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol’s security team ended with the Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) suspending its attempt to arrest him.
“We’ve determined that the arrest is impossible,” the CIO stated, citing Yoon’s resistance to the legal process as “deeply regrettable.” The investigation pertains to Yoon’s brief martial law declaration.
Outside the presidential residence, Yoon’s supporters celebrated the news with songs and chants of “We won.”
The current arrest warrant is valid until 6 January, but the CIO can seek a new warrant to make another attempt.
