Representative Al Green was removed from the House chamber after interrupting President Donald Trump’s joint address to Congress on Tuesday night. The Democratic lawmaker from Houston stood and shouted, “Mr. President, you don’t have a mandate!” in protest of proposed Medicaid cuts, prompting a loud Republican response of “U-S-A!” before House Speaker Mike Johnson ordered his removal.
A longtime critic of Trump, Green previously pushed for his impeachment during the president’s first term. Speaking to reporters afterward, he stood by his actions, reaffirming that Trump “has no mandate to cut Medicaid” and revealing plans to introduce new articles of impeachment.
Green was not alone in protest—several Democratic women wore pink dresses to highlight rising costs affecting women, while others donned yellow and blue ties in solidarity with Ukraine. Some Democrats also held up “false” placards in response to Trump’s claims. Meanwhile, Republicans responded with enthusiastic applause and repeated chants of “U-S-A!” throughout the speech.
