A human rights activist has called on President William Ruto to address unresolved injustices in Nyanza. In an open letter dated September 4, Audi Ogada urged the President to establish a special tribunal to investigate long-standing issues, including past election violence, police brutality, abductions, forced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings.
Ogada highlighted the need for healing, reparations, and inclusive governance, while also acknowledging President Ruto’s efforts to promote cohesion and inclusive leadership by appointing individuals from Nyanza to his government, despite the region’s historic support for the opposition.
“This spirit of inclusivity should be extended to those who were unfairly criticized and marginalized due to their support for you during challenging political times,” Ogada wrote.
He emphasized that the journey toward national unity is ongoing and urged the President to start a healing process to address communal tensions and build respect among different groups and leaders.
Ogada recommended that this process include compensation and reparations for victims of past injustices, as well as measures to outlaw discrimination and derogatory language against any community in Kenya.
The letter also addressed broader issues such as youth unemployment and the concerns of Gen Z. Ogada suggested that President Ruto create a platform to engage with former Nyanza leaders whose contributions could benefit his administration and the country.
Finally, Ogada encouraged the President to continue the spirit of humility and servant leadership demonstrated during his visit to Nyanza, drawing comparisons to biblical figures like David and Moses.
