The Chair of the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Bishop David Oginde, has appointed Abdi Mohamud as the commission’s Chief Executive Officer, effective January 11, 2025. The appointment was announced in a gazette notice published on Thursday, December 5, 2024.
Currently serving as the deputy to outgoing CEO Twalib Mbarak, Mohamud will become the third CEO of the anti-graft body. Mbarak, a former military intelligence officer, assumed office in 2019, succeeding Halakhe Waqo, whose six-year term ended on January 10, 2019. Mohamud’s tenure will also be six years, non-renewable.
His appointment follows approval by the National Assembly after successful vetting by the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee. “Taking into consideration the committee’s findings, this House approves the appointment of Abdi Mohamud as the Secretary and CEO of the EACC,” the committee report stated.
During the vetting process, Mohamud pledged to shield the EACC from political interference, emphasizing his commitment to upholding integrity and independence.
Mohamud is a seasoned investigator and an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya, with over 30 years of experience in combating corruption and economic crimes. His career began in 1989 as a Cadet Inspector in the Kenya Police Service. He joined the Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission (now EACC) in 2005 as a Senior Officer in the Rapid Response Division and rose to lead the Directorate of Investigations.
Throughout his career, Mohamud has undergone extensive training locally and internationally, specializing in corruption and economic crime investigations. He holds a Master’s degree in Security and Risk Management from the University of Leicester (UK), a Bachelor of Laws degree from Mount Kenya University, and a Professional Diploma in Law from the Kenya School of Law.
