President William Ruto’s recent tour of the Mt Kenya region has triggered fresh political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with leaders repositioning themselves based on grassroots sentiments.
The tour exposed deepening rifts, as most allies of impeached Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua skipped the events, while Ruto’s loyalists accompanied him—even facing hostile crowds to defend the government.
In Kiambu, a rivalry has erupted between MP Gathoni wa Muchomba, a vocal government critic, and former MP Gabriel Kago. In Murang’a, NCIC vice chair Wambui Nyutu, aligned with Gachagua, is eyeing the Woman Rep seat currently held by Betty Maina. Nyutu may also consider the Maragua MP seat, following incumbent Mary Wamaua’s defection to Ruto’s camp.
In Laikipia, a looming governorship battle pits MP Mwangi Kiunjuri against former Woman Rep Cate Waruguru, as Governor Joshua Irungu serves his final term. Meanwhile in Nyandarua, former CS Sicily Kariuki, who has met with Gachagua, is preparing to challenge Governor Kiarie Badilisha.
The President’s visit drew resistance in Nyandarua, sparking clashes between his allies and Senator John Methu. MP Wamuchomba warned that unpopular “yes MPs” risk being voted out, stating Ruto will back aspirants favored by the electorate.
Sabaoti MP Caleb Amisi echoed similar sentiments, claiming Ruto had sidelined current Central Kenya MPs, likening the situation to Uhuru Kenyatta’s sidelined handshake allies.
During the tour, Ruto also won over MP Mary Wamaua from Gachagua’s inner circle, signaling shifting allegiances in the region.
