The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) arrested two individuals on Wednesday in a raid at a popular entertainment joint along Lang’ata Road, targeting the illegal shisha trade.
During the operation, authorities seized 16 shisha bongs, 106 cartons of flavored shisha, and a charcoal burner. NACADA’s Director of Compliance and Enforcement, James Koskey, warned shisha operators nationwide, emphasizing that the ban is absolute and violators will face legal action.
Shisha was outlawed in Kenya in 2017 due to health concerns, but illegal sales persist. The latest crackdown follows a Court of Appeal ruling upholding the ban and dismissing a petition by traders seeking its reversal. The court cited severe health risks, including respiratory diseases, cancer, and addiction.
NACADA pledged continued enforcement efforts, urging the public to report any violations as part of a broader initiative to protect public health and combat substance abuse.
