Deputy President Kithure Kindiki traveled to Mozambique on Wednesday morning to represent Kenya at the inauguration of President-elect Daniel Francisco Chapo. Chapo, who secured 65% of the vote, is set to be sworn in despite allegations of electoral irregularities that led to protests and over 270 deaths, according to rights groups.
Chapo’s rival, Venâncio Mondlane, returned from exile last week after surviving an alleged assassination attempt. Before his rise in politics, Chapo held roles as a broadcaster, lecturer, and provincial governor.
Prior to departing, Kindiki met Somalia’s Foreign Affairs Minister Ahmed Moalim at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to discuss Kenya-Somalia relations.
This marks Kindiki’s second international trip and inauguration attendance as Deputy President. During his tenure as Interior Cabinet Secretary, he focused solely on domestic issues, often visiting multiple counties in a single day.
