Mining and Blue Economy CS Hassan Joho has avoided a jail term after the Court of Appeal overturned a 2020 contempt conviction tied to a land dispute during his tenure as Mombasa Governor.
The case involved a contested parcel of land claimed by steel magnates Ashok and Prashibha Doshi. In 2019, Mombasa County officials allegedly violated court orders barring interference with the property, prompting the Doshis to seek legal action against Joho and others.
A prior court ruling found Joho guilty of contempt, stating his agents violated the orders. However, the appellate court ruled in Joho’s favor on November 8, 2024, agreeing that he was not personally served or adequately represented in the proceedings.
The judgment nullifies the earlier conviction, clearing Joho of potential incarceration.
