Kenya’s maritime and blue economy sector, with the potential to generate over Sh500 billion annually, remains largely untapped despite its vast opportunities. The recently launched Malindi Maritime Academy by Mount Kenya University (MKU) aims to bridge the gap in maritime training. The academy, equipped with a simulator—the first of its kind for a civilian institution in East Africa—will offer internationally accredited courses to train seafarers locally, reducing the need for costly overseas education. Leaders emphasized the sector’s potential to create jobs and grow the economy.
