The US Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert for American citizens, warning of potential terrorist attacks. The embassy has indicated that terrorists may target popular locations frequented by US citizens and other foreigners, including tourists, in Nairobi and throughout Kenya.
The alert advises US citizens to be extra cautious due to the ongoing threat of terrorism and kidnapping. Terrorist attacks may occur with little to no warning and could target hotels, restaurants, embassies, malls, markets, schools, police stations, places of worship, and other locations frequented by foreigners and tourists.
The embassy highlighted that the threat level might be higher around anniversaries of past terrorist attacks, such as September 11, the September 21 Westgate Mall attack, and the October 7 Hamas attack against Israel. Citizens are advised to stay vigilant, review their personal security plans, and remain aware of their surroundings.
Additionally, the embassy recommended monitoring local media for updates, avoiding areas with demonstrations, and staying away from crowded places.
In October 2023, Interior CS Kithure Kindiki reported that since the 1998 bombing, which resulted in 213 deaths including 201 Kenyans and 12 Americans, at least 500 lives have been lost due to terror attacks in Kenya.
