Abdullahi Mohamed Nur, Director General of the Tubsan Center and Presidential Advisor on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (PCVE), affirmed Somalia’s resolute commitment to combating terrorism and extremism.
Nur highlighted the country’s comprehensive strategy, which combines direct military action with the enforcement of robust counterterrorism laws and regulations. This approach was underscored following the Cabinet’s approval of the 2024-2027 National Strategy for Preventing and Combating Extremist Ideology, chaired by Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Bare.
The newly approved framework aims to enhance the Tubsan Center’s ability to achieve its mission of fostering a peaceful and prosperous Somalia free from violent extremism. Nur expressed his gratitude to the Prime Minister and the Cabinet for their support in advancing the National Strategy through the necessary procedures.
“This national strategy will strengthen the center’s capacity to reach its objectives and bolster a unified resistance against violent extremism,” Nur stated. “By engaging all segments of society, we are working towards a secure and thriving Somalia, free from terrorism.”
This development follows recent government actions against al Shabaab extremists, resulting in the death of at least 80 suspects. Nur also acknowledged the contributions of those involved in crafting and approving the strategy, emphasizing the center’s progress despite ongoing challenges.
Established in 2023, the Tubsan National Center for Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (TNC-PCVE) is a multi-agency institution tasked with tackling terrorism and violent extremism through a holistic approach. It serves as a coordinating body, integrating efforts from government agencies, civil society, and international partners to devise and implement effective counterterrorism measures.
A core focus of Tubsan is to engage grassroots communities, build resilience, and promote the rejection of extremist ideologies by empowering local leaders and youth, thereby contributing to a more secure and inclusive society.
