The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) has asserted that victims of police brutality during anti-government protests that began last year must be compensated before national dialogue can commence.
In resolutions from a joint meeting of the Parliamentary Group and the National Executive Committee (NEC) on Wednesday, ODM stated that compensation is a key condition to establish a conducive environment for discussions.
Secretary General Edwin Sifuna emphasized that the apprehension of officers implicated in these incidents is another necessary condition. He also called for amnesty for all individuals who have been arrested or abducted, along with the interdiction of Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei.
Sifuna noted that the meeting supported the Central Committee’s earlier call for a National Convention aimed at uniting all Kenyans. “This meeting reiterated the need for this convention to be inclusive, people-centered, and constitutional,” he explained.
Additionally, Sifuna highlighted the party leadership’s mandate to prioritize policy proposals on long-standing issues, including negative ethnicity, unemployment, and social justice.
“A comprehensive policy position will be shared once the preconditions are met and the convention is convened,” he stated. “Every issue must be on the table to find lasting solutions to the challenges facing our nation.”
