Kenyans abroad send billions of dollars home every year, and it is one of Kenya's largest sources of foreign currency. Fees and exchange rates vary a lot between providers, so a few minutes of comparison can save you real money on every transfer.
Quick facts
| Fastest option | Transfer to M-Pesa, often within minutes |
|---|---|
| Main ways to receive | M-Pesa, bank account, or cash pickup |
| True cost | Transfer fee plus the exchange-rate markup |
| Common providers | Wise, Remitly, WorldRemit, Sendwave, Western Union, MoneyGram, and some banks |
| Regulator in Kenya | Central Bank of Kenya |
Compare the total cost, not just the fee
Many services advertise "zero fees" but give a worse exchange rate. To compare:
- Check the mid-market rate (the rate you see on Google or XE).
- Enter the same amount in two or three providers.
- Compare how many shillings arrive, after all fees.
M-Pesa or bank?
- M-Pesa: fast and convenient for family support. M-Pesa wallets have balance and transaction limits, so very large sums may need a bank.
- Bank account: better for large amounts, school fees, land and building projects.
- Cash pickup: useful for recipients without mobile money.
Sending for building, land or business
Many diaspora losses come from land fraud and building projects managed by others. Pay into the seller's or contractor's registered account, do a land search through the Ministry of Lands (Ardhisasa) before paying, and use a lawyer for land purchases.
Avoid scams
- Never send money to someone you have only met online.
- Confirm urgent requests by calling the person on a number you already know.
- Only use licensed providers.
Tax and reporting
Personal gifts to family are not usually taxed as income in Kenya, but rules in your country of residence vary, for example US reporting rules for large gifts. Ask a tax adviser for large transfers.
