Kenya replaced most visas with an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) in 2024. Almost every visitor, including citizens of the US, UK, Canada and Australia, must get an approved eTA before boarding. Here is everything you need to know.
Quick facts
| Official website | etakenya.go.ke only |
|---|---|
| Fee | About US$30 for a standard single entry (check the portal for the current fee) |
| Processing | Up to 3 working days; apply at least 3 days before travel |
| Apply | Up to 90 days before you travel |
| Stay | Up to 90 days per entry |
| Exempt | Citizens of East African Community partner states, Kenyan permanent residents and permit holders, and some others |
Documents you need
- Passport valid at least 6 months after arrival, with blank pages.
- A recent passport-style photo or selfie.
- Flight or onward travel details.
- Hotel booking or invitation letter with your host's address.
- A debit or credit card.
- Extra documents for some trip types (for example business letters).
How to apply
- Go to etakenya.go.ke and start an application.
- Upload your passport bio page and photo.
- Enter your trip, accommodation and contact details.
- Pay the fee by card.
- Wait for approval by email; print it or keep it on your phone.
Common mistakes
- Using a look-alike website. Many sites charge US$80 or more for the same eTA. The official domain ends in
.go.ke. - Leaving it too late. Airlines check before boarding.
- Typos in passport numbers. A mismatch can mean denied boarding; reapply if you spot one.
- Using an eTA to work. Volunteering or paid work may need a pass or permit.
Arriving in Kenya
Check health entry rules before you fly; a yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. Also read our Kenya safety guide for 2026 for the latest US advisory.
