Nine individuals, including five National Police Reservists and two National Government Administration Officers, have been arrested in connection with inter-clan clashes in Mogil, Elgeyo Marakwet County. The clashes on January 2 resulted in three deaths and displaced many residents.
Authorities confirmed the violence was unrelated to cattle rustling, a common issue in the Kerio Valley, which has seen reduced gun attacks due to ongoing security measures.
President William Ruto, during a visit on January 5, reiterated the government’s commitment to restoring security and reopening schools closed due to past banditry. He emphasized that health facilities, schools, and other social amenities in the region would be revived within three months.
Operation Maliza Uhalifu North Rift, launched in February 2023, has significantly reduced cattle rustling and banditry across nine counties, including Elgeyo Marakwet. Over 170 illegal firearms have been recovered, 250 suspects arrested, and thousands of livestock returned.
The government has also restructured police reservists, recruited 1,702 new personnel, and allocated Sh100 million to rehabilitate schools affected by violence. As of December 2024, 26 schools have reopened, enabling 4,000 children to return to learning.
Efforts to strengthen governance include creating 126 new administrative units in the affected counties to enhance resource allocation and improve security response.
