Following the US aid suspension announced by former President Donald Trump, which led to over 35,000 job losses and the closure of 150 clinics in Kenya, China has pledged continued support for Kenya’s development. Speaking in Nairobi,cemphasized that global progress should not be dictated by a single power but by collective efforts. She reaffirmed China’s commitment to mutual respect, equality, and economic cooperation with Africa, which represents a vast market of 2.8 billion people.
Ambassador Haiyan criticized isolationist policies, asserting that China champions a global community based on shared development and trust. She highlighted China’s initiatives under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Belt and Road Initiative, citing projects like the Mombasa-Nairobi Standard Gauge Railway as key benefits of China-Kenya relations. Xinhua’s News Photo Exhibition in Nairobi showcased China’s 75 years of sustainable development, reinforcing its model for economic resilience.
Kenyan leaders, including President Uhuru Kenyatta, responded to the aid cut by urging Africa to seek self-reliance. Kenyatta stated that the funding suspension should serve as a wake-up call for African nations to harness their resources effectively. China’s continued engagement with Kenya aligns with its broader strategy of fostering economic ties across the Global South.
